Frederick Beer & Wine Lovers DIY

The Flying Barrel  has been in business in Frederick Md since 1980, providing all the home brewing supplies that home brewing beer and wine lovers need. Just over a year ago, they moved from their previous location on Carroll Street in Downtown Frederick to 1781 N. Market Street (Market St. Extension). The Manager James McEver was kind enough to give me the tour.

The Flying BarrelFlying Barrel Brew Supplies in Frederick Md has equipment kits for around $100 and ingredient kits from $42 to $56. The shelves are full of all kinds of supplies, ingredients, books and equipment for wine and beer brewing. They also sell on the online store at their website.

If you’re new to wine- or beer-making, classes are offered through the City of Frederick Rec Department. The the next beer-making class starts Jan 17.

Brew-On-Premises in Frederick Md

The most awesome thing about Flying Barrel is the “Brew on Premises” idea. They have a fully stocked facility where you can brew your own beer or wine, using their equipment, under however much or little guidance you want. Best of all, they clean up when you’re done. I’ve never brewed beer or wine, but there is something innately culinary about it that appeals to me…there are hundreds of recipes that can be tweaked and experimented with from the types and measurements of ingredients to the length of the cooking process and more.

While I was there two beer lovers were brewing 15 gallons of beer for the holidays. They started out with 5 gallons of a dark ale, and 10 gallons of a lighter brew that was to be split in half, and 5 gallons of that was to be “tweaked” with other ingredients. Brewing Beer at The Flying BarrelIt looks like a lot of fun, doesn’t it?

I’m not going to begin to explain the process, even though James enthusiastically shared the details with me:) I think I will get my beer-loving hubbie to take a class with me and take advantage of the coaching provided by the staff and volunteers. The benefits:

  • I don’t have to clean up!
  • Home brewers are limited in the quantity they brew. Here, you can brew 5, 10 or 15 gallons, or even more, at a time.
  • No experience necessary, the help is there.
  • I can try brewing to see if I like it before I lay out the money for the equipment.
  • I don’t have to clean up!

The Society of Beer-Lovers

Did you know that there was a club of home brewers in Frederick? I didn’t either. The group is called FOAM, Frederick’s Original Ale Makers. They meet at Flying Barrel once a month on Monday’s to enjoy each other’s home brewed beer and company. There are about 100 members in the Club. There are about 200 home brewers in the Frederick area who get supplies from the Barrel. Well, make that 201 now:)

Just to make it even easier on the home brewer, they have a fermenting room, so you don’t even have to find a place at home to fit your barrels and jugs. No need to worry if the temperature and humidity is right; no need to ruin the batch you’ve just worked so hard to bring to its artistic culinary perfection.
